Jesus and the Gift of Friendship

Trillia Newbell

Illustrated by

Kristen & Kevin Howdeshell

Picture Book, Social Emotional, Prayer, Jesus' Life & Ministry

This book takes a compelling angle of walking through a real life experience for a child--moving to a new town and trying to make new friends. Along the way, the child has conversations with his mother about friendship, prayer, and Jesus. A number of important concepts are touched on in a relatively realistic way as they're woven into a realistic seeming story.

Synopsis

The main character, a young boy, is getting ready to move at the opening of the book. When he moves he misses playing outside with his best friend from his old home. He faces disappointment in seeking new friends, so his mom chats with him about how Jesus is not only our Savior but also our friend. Sam's understanding of Jesus and His impact on His life is deepened as he wrestles with what this means for him. He prays asking for a new friend and is patient through a season of no friends. At the end, he makes a new friend, and celebrates the diversity of having different friends, just like Jesus.

What I Love

I appreciated how realistic the background story was--this book didn't feel like a forced Bible or moral lesson. This natural story setting also allowed for a wider variety of experiences to be discussed such as patience, diversity, grief, change, disappointment, prayer, how to make a new friend, etc. I also appreciated that while there was a gospel message it wasn't overly pushy nor did it dominate the story. Excellent for the back to school season when kids are all making new school friends.

Weaker points

This book would probably be a pretty long and abstract read for many 3 year olds. But, the sentences are still short and simple enough to make it very appropriate for 4 and up. The topic applies even beyond 8, but the style and simplicity of the story make it suite the younger age range best. It does deal with a sad experience of moving away from a close friend, but models how to process it in a healthy and age appropriate way.
