Miracle Man The Story of Jesus

Illustrated by
John Hendrix
Lent, Picture Book, Bible Story, Jesus' Life & Ministry

This one is a big family favorite. With creative illustrations that blend with powerful words and bring the ideas to life, this book offers a fresh and personal look at Jesus’ ministry. The content is Biblically rooted and emotionally very moving, but also extremely accessible. While it is aimed at older kids, it is, for some reason, particularly loved by our four year old and even our one year old (when abridged for a quicker read). It never gets old.
Synopsis
Starting by painting a picture of a desolate world in need of a rescuer, the book then walks through highlights of Jesus ministry, including: calling of the disciples; healing of the leper, paralytic, and blind man; calming the storm; feeding the five thousand; walking on water; and the passion events from the last supper through the resurrection.
What I Love
I love how this Biblically accurate book brings a fresh perspective to well-known stories of Jesus' life and ministry. The words and illustrations work seamlessly together to create a very unique experience that is engaging, reverent, and thought-provoking.
Weaker points
The unique style, of this book can be disorienting at first. Don't expect a normal story-telling picture book format. It's more of vignettes of scenes from Jesus' ministry told with poetic writing and words that bleed into the illustrations. Despite being confused by this at first, I think this is where the book's strength lies--it is simultaneously deep and engaging without being overly personal. Do note also that while I say this book has a wide age appeal, it is quite a long read with many pages and lots of words and abstract ideas. I think it is the unique and engaging illustrations that draw in the reader. Only other note is that Christ is depicted (in case that is of concern to you).
